Swimmer, choice ahoy!

I've signed up for a swim wear class in November with the CAE.

I'm really looking forward to it, as we are renting a beach house with my sister and brother in law over New Years, I plan to swim as much as possible, hence the need for new swimmer.

I've always wanted to make some bathers as I find the fit on my lower half so hard, last time we had a beach holiday, I planned on spending big bucks on good quality swimmers, I tried 4 different shops, all different types of  bathers but nothing made me feel comfortable, which to me is more important than looking good.

As I want to use my class time wisely, I'm thinking about making a one piece, as the fitting might be easier? I'm very drawn to the Mrs Depew pattern (last image), as I think the grading won't be so much of an issue on my pear shaped figure. The one thing I'm wary about is I haven't seen any made up, there are thousands of sewing blogs out there and if no one has made one and blogged it, well in my experience its not good thing.

I have the first three patterns at home, but I'm willing to go another direction if I can find the right pattern.

Do you have any suggestions of good swim wear patterns with a vintage feel? Any advice or tips, would be greatly appreciated.

Kat

  1. Oooh, I'm looking forward to seeing you do this - I just got M6569 to attempt a pair of bathers for summer as well, just got to order the laminated foam for the interfacing/bodice and I'll be ready to go once I build up enough courage! I don't know if you saw Dixie DIY's swimsuit sew along that just finished? Thats what got me interested in it.

    1. Yes I did see that, but I've been interested long before that. :)
Where did you order the laminated foam from?

  2. What a great class to take! I'd love to make my own swimmers so I'd love to see what you make and how you go. Sadly no advice though.

  4. Hi...BurdaStyle has a free download pattern for a vintage style one piece, it's called the Alison suit. (I tried to paste the link but it's not working for me!). I've read a few blog posts about cossie making....most have reported a good experience! Great that you've found a course to do! Good luck!

    1. Thank Cherrypix, I like the front of the Alison but the low cut back doesn't really appeal, plus I'm not a fan of taping patterns together - I'm too lazy!

  5. I'll be interested to see how you find the class, swimwear is just still something that boggles the mind for me...if a mistake is made and the wardrobe malfunctions... High risk in swimwear! Good luck!

  6. I loved making the Mrs Depew pattern! here's my version and all of my notes: http://megthegrand.blogspot.com/2012/06/sew-weekly-challenge-v-c-t-i-o-n-in.html

I cannot recommend it enough, but there is a zipper involved and it really does help with the fit!

I also have your second pattern cut out, but as it is just getting chilly around here, I think it will have to wait until summer rolls around again :)

Let me know what you pick!

  7. I will be of totally no use here... but I recently bought some AMAZING fabric designed for swimwear so I'm planning to get in on the action too. I'll have to check out the CAE - they have some really interesting courses on!! I'm just loving the options on that McCalls pattern - it's the first that I've liked at first site to date. Specifically View D. But I like the idea of a structured one piece too.. mainly because you can build in a bit of support. That last piece would be super flattering too - love the vintage lines.
