The ultimate work in progress.

I've been a slow seamstress the last couple of months and its not all related to gardening and house projects. I have some works in progress, 3 dresses and a skirt, they just seem to be taking forever as I have no energy theses days. What I currently working on is my most important work in progress to date.

Meet Ginger!

I'm 17 weeks with Ginger as we affectionately call "her" (total speculation on our part).

The last few months have been rough with spectacular morning sickness, and chronic tiredness which seems never ending and pimples galore. I'm hoping that I'm on the back end of the nausea, as I've manage to lose 5.6kgs since I've been pregnant, lucky me eh? I've come to conclude that pregnancy is much like going through puberty.

It's not all bad news, Ginger is staying strong and I can feel her moving around now, which is really lovely. I'm hoping that I start enjoying my pregnancy once the morning sickness finishes up, hopefully by 18 weeks my doctor assures me. We find out the sex of Ginger in 3 weeks, I'm totally excited to find out. We plan to start working on the nursery in late December, the nursery will be themed, most likely with Sarah Jane fabric and I'm hoping to make a quilt out of the same fabrics.

As for maternity wear, I do plan to make a few items but the pattern I have found don't appeal to me. Any helpful suggestions?

    1. Thank you Rachel, to make up for no suggestions you can help me (make me) a quilt! :)

  2. Basically, what Rachel said. We're kinda all counting on you to road-test all the appropriate maternity patterns ;) Does any of Megan Neilson's patterns appeal?

    1. I'll get the wrapped top for sure, and maybe the ruched tee, but the skirt won't flatter my figure. There is a burda pattern I was eyeing off, I have limited energy so we'll see how I go.

  4. I am SO thrilled to read this! Congratulations, I know that this bub is very much wanted, and am so pleased that it is all happening for you. My tip for maternity clothes - stretch fabrics, wrap dresses, yoga pants, and I was a big fan of huge above the belly knickers (comfy!). Lots of the clothes that I usually make are empire line tops in stretch fabrics - those types of patterns will get you through quite a while. StyleARC have a maternity pack and the Megan Nielson maternity patterns look quite nice too. Best wishes!

    1. Thank you so much Lara, I teared up a little reading your comment. Its so true, I love ginger so much and I can't wait to meet her or him.
I have been looking at your blog, and getting plenty of ideas, I didn't realize StyleARC did maternity wear, I'll go have a look soon. Can you purchase the patterns in Melbourne somewhere?

  6. Congratulations on your little one, commiserations on the morning sickness - been there and can fully empathise! Good luck on the maternity patterns too - the majority of them are very very bad, I had more luck altering non maternity patterns than using actual maternity patterns. Burdastyle have a pair of maternity pants and a ruched skirt that aren't too bad, which you can download if you don't buy the mag.

Hope you get your energy back soon!

    1. Thanks for the comment Kristy, if it wasn't for the constant nasuea I think I would be fine, but thankfully I feel its settling down now. I have the feeling that it will be easier to alter that buy a new mat pattern. I've only seen a few I like.

  7. Congratulations!!! That is such exciting news. Sorry I won't be any help on the maternity clothes. I didn't make myself anything. I lived pretty much in leggings and baby doll style dresses.

    1. Thanks Kat! I'm not really a legging fan unless its under a tunic top, however I feel this will change as long as they're not see through. Not a good look at all! When did you start wearing maternity clothes.

  8. Wow Kat! Congratulations! I know how much you wanted this little one and I'm so pleased this is happening for you. Congrats again! Maternity clothes = stretch, stretch, stretch.

  9. This is so gorgeous - the sewing blogworld is exploding with babies!!
Fear not things will settle down. I never had morning sickness but I did get pimples and extremely fatigue and breathlessness with my first. The second baby I had no pimples or anything... but I did get the world's worst stretch marks LOL. Can't win them all. She was ENORMOUS!
Have a wonderful pregnancy! I wore my own clothes up until about 5 months or more. Continued to wear a pair of trousers until the last couple of weeks and just lots of floaty tops!

    1. I experienced breathlessness for the first time a few weeks ago, I'm happy I'm going into the second trimester as things should settle down! I find my jeans are still comfy but the waist is a little too high now.

  10. Congrats! And my suggestion--go vintage. Modern maternity patterns are few and far between, and while there is a line of maternity only, they're horrifically expensive. So look towards vintage. Measurements are everything there, and they only come in one size, so tracking them down will involve a bit of effort on your part. However, in vintage, they're actually available!

    1. Modern maternity are not fun, I sometimes think it maybe better to pay 120+ for a dress that make one from the modern patterns. I'm not 100% sure if vinatge maternity is my thing but they sure are a better option that most modern mat patterns.

  11. Hooray!!!!!!! If you're making maternity dresses, if they are knits make them nursing friendly, or go for separates that you will be able to add nursing tops with

    1. Thanks Sarah, I'm looking at a few from your shop. :)
I think I'll have to layer the tops or dresses as it will be freezing in the winter months in Bacchus marsh.

  12. A huge congratulations! A well deserved baby bump. I am so glad it all worked out. Stretch to the max is all the go with maternity clothes. And you will NOT want to wear maternity clothes after you have the baby no matter what you think before. All the best! Pregnancy did not agree with me but motherhood certainly does! L x

    1. Thanks for your well wishes! Maternity clothes do not do it for me, however I will not turn into one of those mums that wear track suits all the time - not my style at all, not that there's any wrong with that!
I think I'm with you, pregnancy doesn't agree with me, but I'm hoping motherhood will. Thanks again!

  13. Congratulations Kat!!!! I'm so happy for you! What lovely news. Like the others, stretch fabrics are key. And tent dresses. And what Leith said is true - you win't want to wear them once Ginger arrives. Congratulations again - I'm so excited for you!!

    1. Thanks Rachel!!!! I've looked at your blog for inspiration, you made quite a bit, I don't think I'll be so productive but I'll try to make a few things. Did you make any baby clothes?

  14. Awesome news! Congratulations.
I've been there done that three times but my skills weren't up for maternity sewing so can't offer too many pattern suggestions.
I usually go to op shops to find things that fit and I'm fine with ditching afterwards if I want as they were cheap. Maybe you could refashion?
Skirts with stretchy waistbands are perfect. Jersey dresses. There are tons of tutorials on how to add an elastic waistband to pants/jeans. Cotton On has cheap tank tops that are long and super stretchy which will see you through summer if you're into fitted clothes more than tents. Tents never suited me, whether preggers or not.
And if you're interested I have a different blog which I've documented outfits I've worn the past 2.5 years (including with my 3rd pregnancy) and outfits that I've been able to breastfeed in. Maybe you might find some inspiration there too? (www.modelmumma.blogspot.com)

Again, congrats! Motherhood is the most rewarding and amazing journey! (sorry for this long comment!!! :)

  16. Oh my goodness! Congratulations on the fabulous news!!! Yay, another pregnant seamstress! There are so many of us breeding at the moment. There must be something in the water :)

Sorry to hear you've been so crook. The first trimester is a bi-atch that I would like to punch in the face, but it's for such a great cause and it's definitely worth it. I hope you are getting as many naps as possible.

Is this baby number one for you guys? I'm ridiculously excited for you!

I recommend Burda 7739 and Mccall 6332. Neither of them are maternity patterns, but they have empire waistlines so they work. :)

  17. WOO! GINGER NINJA! :) About time you've got a baby bump starting to show! You're gonna look so gorgeous banana! Especially in Navy blue polkadots! ;)

I can't wait to hear what the sex is and I'm happy to help you with whatever you might want to throw yourself into! (Quilting? Eating chocolate? Painting the room?)
    :D
    I'll babysit!

Glad you're starting to feel better though, or else I would have recommended shares in UpandGo :P

    Luffs you.

  18. Woo hoo! Another blogger bump to follow. I like sewing stretch for maternity wear but agree with sew Brunswick that it's not nice wearing them once bub is out. If you get the energy to make any that is!

    1. Thanks! My expectations are not too high, if I get 3 to 6 things made I'll be very happy. Anything else is a bonus, since we have to rearrange our whole house and paint and decorate etc the nursery.

  20. Spectacular news! So happy to hear that all is going well except for the morning sickness - after all these years I still remember it. But once it eases your energy should start coming back. No real new suggestions on the maternity wear - a couple of empire line dress/tunic things and leggings got me through the last few months. I recently did some research for my preggers sis-in-law and was underwhelmed except for the Megan Nielsen patterns. So-Zo also did a tute on how to do a ruched tshirt adaptation if that is useful. Congrats!!
