Crushing on Marc Jacobs and shipping costs.

from Mood fabrics.

I found some beautiful eyelet- its all the rage in the US and the warmer climates at the moment,  I was thinking of making a sweet but work approiate dress out of this eyelet. I asked Mood Fabrics via their website for a shipping quote on this Marc Jacobs eyelet and almost fell off my chair when I got the email back.

It was $220-$240 USD! Now admittedly I also put in 3 yards of dotted swiss/cotton and 3 ponte which I put in for the sake of it but geeze golly whiz batman for 9 yards, thats ridiculous!

I asked what was the cheapest option and Christina told me that was it! Meg then contacted me saying once they get there new website up and running the cost may be lower. While I'm looking forward to the new site its at least 6 months away, and pretty fabric doesn't stick around that long.

I shop online regulary and have never come across such a high price. I worked out that if I saved $2001.22 I could just fly over there and pick it up. Come to think of it, that might not be a bad idea....

What would the highest you would ever pay for shipping?

  1. That is ridiculous! You need to find someone in the states to ship this to you. good luck.

  2. I know, we live in Australia not the back of beyond. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in the states. :(

  3. Ok, now I'm getting a little freaked out at how similar we are after just reading two of your posts... I had this fabric open in my browser for over two days. I eventually gave in and tried to order it from mood - but they're so archaic that they wanted me to CALL during their business hours (when I'd be in the land of nod) to pay for the order. Haven't they heard of paypal? Needless to say I'm super glad I didn't end up doing it - the estimate they gave me for shipping costs was more in the order of US$50. Had it not been for the payment hiccup, I would have gone through Hop Shop Go. Bummer for both of us!

    1. On that note - I have heard rumours that Mood will be updating their online shopping experience in the next year - lets hope it includes more friendly international postage prices!

  4. Hey Melanie! I ended up getting the fabric through Farmhouse Fabrics in the US. The shipping is very reasonable 18USD in comparison to Mood.
Meg did say they were changing their website, but they will be loosing business in the meantime.

This is the link if you wany it.

  5. Ohh I've been a long time fan of your blog. I have some of the same fabric as you. Hop Shop Go looks addictive, have you used it before?

  6. Yup, I had used hop shop go, but the minimum shipping cost from them is about $24, so a) the initial postage has to be cheap cheap and b) you've got to buy enough of something to make the double up of postage costs worth it. But sometimes you've just gotta have something, ammiright? Thanks a million for that link - I hadn't come across Farmhouse Fabrics before, so I'm looking forward to checking it out!
